Discover The Beauty of Leh-Ladakh

                            Leh-Ladakh
Leh & Ladakh, situated amidst the Great Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges in the scenic state of Jammu and Kashmir, are two of the most spectacular places in the world where scores of tourists from across the globe throng annually. Emblems of pure paradisiacal beauty, Leh & Ladakh are all about awe-inspiring landscapes, picturesque green oasis, scintillating monasteries and quaint hamlets. You are taken in by the breathtaking beauty the moment you land in this incredible mountain town. Get mesmerised by the amazingly pristine blue sky and transfer to a world of complete solitude admiring the mountain flowers, the snow covered peaks, the streams flowing by and the deep valleys. Monks in maroon robes, men trailing behind herd of sheep and the lilting mountain music, are some of the common sights and sounds of Leh &Ladakh.
Leh, located about 3505 meters above sea level, is the centre of Tibeto-Buddhist culture, evident by the thoroughly scattered colourful gompas or monasteries in the region. Being situated on the snow-clad fringes of the Himalayan Mountains, Leh offers its tourists the chance to experience the magical charm of Himalayas and to explore its rough and rugged terrains.
The land of Ladakh, renowned as the cold desert, holds immense pristine beauty for its beholder. It stretches from peak to peak, like a heavenly work of art done in strokes of brown, grey and purple with stripes of silver and speckles of green beside the Indus River.
With numerous tourist attractions to discover and availability of various adventure sports like mountain climbing, trekking and rafting on the Indus, a trip to Leh & Ladakh is always an exhilarating and indelible experience for travellers.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to plan a Leh-Ladakh tour is in summers from June to September, when the temperatures are around 20-30°C and the region has clear, stunning views with warm and sunny weather. However, at night, the temperatures drop sharply.
You can plan your trip to Leh & Ladakh by road or you can fly to this exquisite land. If you plan to travel by road, you can either take the Manali-Leh route or the Srinagar-Leh one as they are open to vehicles in summer months. On your way, you’ll pass through some delightful sites and ranges. If you plan to take a flight from Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu or Srinagar, take a window seat and catch some magnificent sights like that of the Zanskar River, the Tso-Moriri Lake, the Karakoram ranges and the mighty Himalayas.

Leh Palace

Timings: 07:00 AM - 04:00 PM (every day)
Entry fees: INR 15 per person (Indian citizens), INR 100 (Foreigner nationals)
Located on the top of the deserted Tsemo Hill, Leh palace is also known as Lhachen Palkhar. The former palace of the royal family of Leh, it was erected in the 17th century. The place was one of the tallest structures with 9 storyes during its heydays. Today, it is one of the most popular attractions in Leh. From the top, the views of Stok Kangri, Ladakh mountain ranges and the town are simply breathtaking. Slightly ruined in condition, the palace is now managed by the Archaeological Survey of India’ (ASI).

Architecture
Sharing its resemblance with the popular Potala Palace of Lhasa, the Leh Palace is a wonderful specimen of the medieval Tibetan style of architecture. The structure appears to be cold in summers and quite warm in the winters. The palace is built up of mud, wood, sand and stones, and is slightly smaller in size than Potala.
Though slightly in ruins, the small compartments, carved entrances, capacious rooms and expansive corridors haven’t lost their charm. The bigger corridors and rooms have now been turned into exhibition falls. Do not miss stunning murals on the walls of the palace, depicting the magnificence of its original times.
The Victory Tower just beside the Leh Palace is another popular landmark of Ladakh. This tower was built in the commemoration of Ladakhi soldiers who laid their lives in the war against the attacking Balti Kashmiri in the 16th century.

Attractions
Overlooking the Namgyal hill and the Leh town, the grand Leh Palace is an important center of the Buddhist religion as well as culture. The palace also comprises of a monastery that features a statue of Lord Buddha. In the exhibition halls of the palace, have a look at the old paintings and picture, some great artistic work along Tibetan thangka. Some of the paintings here are as old as 450 years and were created using colors that were made from powdered gems and stones. They look as fresh as new to the onlooker. In the Leh Palace, you can also spot a wonderful collection of royal jewelry, ceremonial dresses and crowns.

Shanti Stupa

One of the seven Buddhist Shanti Stupas across the world, the Shanti Stupa in Leh, Ladakh is an abode of peace and serenity. The purely white, dome shaped structure towers two storeys high above the surrounding landscape.

Set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains of Ladakh, the Stupa commands excellent views of the scenic locale. Although the beautifully pristine architecture of the structure makes it a marvel during the daytime, the beauty of the Stupa is further compounded during the evening hours when it is lit up from the inside.

The Shanti Stupa reflects a unique architectural style, far different from the other Ladakhi Stupas. The first level of the Stupa houses a life-sized figure of Gautam Buddha, while the second level contains murals depicting three incidents in the Lord’s life- his birth, his death and attainment of ‘mahanirvana’, and his defeat of evil powers through meditation.

The Shanti Stupa also houses a meditation hall in its premises. The best time to visit the Shanti Stupa is during the hours of dusk and dawn. During this time, the fantastic play of natural light on the white Stupa walls and the surrounding snow-capped mountains offers a majestic view.

How to Reach Shanti Stupa
1. By Car: The best and easiest way to reach Shanti Stupa from Leh is to drive there. Shanti Stupa is located around 5 kilometers outside the city of Leh. The drive between the two places takes around 13 minutes.

2. On Foot: The alternate way to reach Shanti Stupa from Leh is to scale the road on foot. Although this method is more tiresome, you will be met with a number of scenic spots on the way. It would take around 45 minutes to trek to Shanti Stupa from Let via Changspa Road.

Shey Monastery

Shey monastery and palace is located 15 kilometers from Leh town on the Leh - Manali road. Shey palace and the monastery were built in the 16th Century AD. The monastery enshrines the Du-Khang with an almost 10 meter high copper statue of Lord Buddha.
The Shey palace was built by King Deledan Nagmyal and Shey Palace boasts of the largest victory stupa in Leh, the top of which is made of pure gold. The Shey Palace was the abode of the royal family till 1834 AD when they moved to the Stok palace. The Shey Palace has been taken over by ASI for conservation.

Hemis Gompa

Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist monastery (gompa) of the Drukpa Lineage, in Hemis, Ladakh, India. Situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal. The annual Hemis festival honouring Padmasambhava is held in early June.
The main building has white walls. The entrance to the complex is through a big gate that reaches a large courtyard. The stones of the walls are decorated and painted with religious figures. On the northern side are two assembly halls, and as in most of the monasteries one can also see the guardian deities and the Wheel of Life here. The Hemis Monastery also has an important library of Tibetan books and a very impressive and valuable collection of Thangkas, gold statues and Stupas embedded with precious stones.

One of the largest Thangkas is displayed every 12 years during the Hemis Festival, held for two days in June-July. The annual festival, commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava brings alive the courtyard of the monastery. The festival, where good triumphs over evil in a colourful pageant, also holds the annual 'bazaar' where Ladakhis from remote areas buy and sell wares. During the festival, various rituals and mask dances are performed in this courtyard. Hemis is about 40 km from Leh and can be visited comfortably in one day if one is traveling by car or jeep.

  • Hemis National Park

  • Hemis National Park was established in 1981 initially to save the Rumbak and Markha catchments.  Named after the famous Hemis Gompa, it is located in northern India, part of the Jammu and Kashmir State.  With the park now being 4,400 sq. kms, it is the largest National park in the south Asia region.  Hemis Park is home to six villages which inhabit about 1,600 people.  It is also home to the Snow Leopard and many other amazing creatures. (1)(4)

Thiksey Monastery

Even though the tourism in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is dependent on its scenic beauty and surreal locations, it is rightly said that the charm of this paradise is certainly incomplete without the presence of monasteries.

Unarguably, Jammu and Kashmir is extremely famous for its beautiful and age-old monasteries too. If you are looking to figure out the history of any place in Jammu and Kashmir, it is wise to head to the nearby monasteries.

Ladakh is one the few places in the state which is dotted with several monasteries. One such amazing monastery is Thiksey Monastery, which is located atop a hill amid the beautiful terrains of the Indus Valley; it is one of the largest monasteries in Jammu and Kashmir and is also spelt as Thiksay or Thikse. Read on to know more about this marvellous monastery.
Stok Palace

The Stok Palace was built in 1822, as a smaller retreat, since the main palace of the Namgyals was the Leh Palace, some 15km away, across the Indus. In a decade, however, Ladakh had been annexed into the Dogra kingdom of Kashmir and the Namgyals were made the jagirdars of Stok village.
Architectural significance and features
The construction of palace complex at Stok a significant architectural landmark among the buildings in the Ladakh region built by the rulers of the Namgyal Dynasty. It marks the final phase of the evolution of fortified palace residences characteristic of this region. Although smaller in typological characteristic and elements used, the combined clarity of concept and a remarkably high level of attention to detail and craftsmanship attest to its architectural significance. This building showcases several important features such as the ingenious system of spatial planning with access passages, important rooms including the royal apartments and prayer chamber are arranged around multi-level interlinked courtyards, elevation elements including the large, decorative projected balconies at the upper levels of the otherwise austere five storied main building, support and service space found only in buildings of this type such as three storied grain silos and drainage passages, have resulted in a building which together with the surrounding courtiers’ houses is an outstanding example of the vernacular architecture of this area. It is also unique in that it is the only residential complex in the region which contains murals of very high quality on various themes, both secular and religious.
Spaces such as the entry courtyard and yabkhor (veranda) and Lhakchung (temple) on the upper floor, indicate the pivotal role of the palace in the social and religious activities of the Ladakhis in the past. In addition, the numerous chortens (stupas) and mane walls in the vicinity attest to the cultural significance of the palace.
Magnetic Hill

Ladakh, the very word creates an image in our minds of a mysterious land and people who have been there would agree that it certainly lives up to the expectations. Centuries ago Shah Jahan said that if there is a paradise on earth then it’s in Kashmir. To that I say that he did not visit Ladakh or would certainly have changed his opinion. Or maybe he did and included Ladakh as well when he said the word “Kashmir”. Out of the several enchanting places in Ladakh, there is one that has mystified people for long and still continues to do so. It is a small stretch of road located about 30 kilometers from Leh towards Kargil and known as Magnetic Hill of Ladakh.
On this particular part of the Srinagar – Leh highway, you would clearly see the road ahead going uphill. Yet if you turned off the engine and let your vehicle stand in neutral, it will slowly start moving and can go up to a speed of 20 kilometers per hour on its own. This spot is also known by the names of ‘Gravity Hill Ladakh’ or ‘Gravity Defying Hill Ladakh’. Mysterious? I agree.
                      Ladakh Magnetic Hill Mystery
What happens at Magnetic Hill? Well, there are a few different theories behind it. As per the most common theory, what is believed to be at work behind this mysterious phenomenon is a magnetic force so strong that it can pull cars uphill. It is in fact so notorious that even the airplanes that fly over this region increase their altitude in order to avoid magnetic interference.
Every tourist driver that passes through here would kill the engine to let the tourists experience how the car still kept moving. Some people are not aware about the mystery of magnetic hill in Ladakh and just pass through here; but the ones who do know stop their cars to verify whether what they heard was true or merely a made-up tale.
Khardung La

It is not very often that one gets to drive on a road at an altitude of 18,380 feet. That is where Khardungla Pass, meaning the ‘Pass of Lower Castle,’ is located on the way from Leh to the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. It is the highest motorable road in the world as signs put up by the Border Roads Organization proudly proclaim.

The Marsimikla Pass, at 18632 feet, in eastern Ladakh has missed out on the top honours as it allows for only some kinds of four wheeled vehicles across it.

The Khardungla has quite a bit of history behind it according to documents available with the Indian Army.

“Ladakh lies at the crossroads of the ancient trade routes from the Indian subcontinent to the great East-West trade highway or the ‘Silk Route.’ The traditional trade caravan routes traversed the passes of Zoji La (La means pass in Ladakhi), Namik La and Fotu La from Kashmir, and Baralacha La, Pang La and Taglang La from Himachal across the Great Himalayan and Zanskar ranges into the Indus River valley, converging at Leh. From here it was possible to move to Tibet and Baltistan. Northwards from Leh, trade caravans carrying pashmina shawls, spices, opium and saffron cross the Ladakh range through the Khardung La or Chang La, traversed the forbidding Karakoram (meaning: Place of Black Gravel) range through the Karakoram pass and thence to the central Asian towns of Yarkand and Kashgar on the Silk Route. The caravans brought back precious stones, hashish, tobacco and silk.”
Nubra Valley

Oldest and largest monastery in the Nubra valley , with it's own history coinciding with the history of the early settlements here.. Situated on a small hillock above the flood area of Shyok river , over viewing the vast Nubra valley and facing the Diskit town. This monastery was built is the 14th century under royal patronage inside the palace premises and later on the entire palace was converted to monastery. The premises is at various levels connected by a good number of stairs which should be kept in mind. The premises are ancient and the paintings are old which are being restored remarkably well by a group of conservationists from Austria , the work is still in progress. The monastery practices Vajrayana form of Buddhism and nowadays it is maintained by Thiksey monastery and so being known as sub-gompa of Thiksey. There is a Buddha statue in main prayer hall surrounded by Thangka paintings and photography is allowed here. Uniqueness of this place is that there is an exclusive temple for gods including some which are derived from Hinduism like Kali , Kuber etc. These statues are believed to be so powerful that their faces have been kept covered and are not shown to anyone except the learned in the Vajrayana way. Once in a year a festival is celebrated in this monastery which falls in the month of February and only in this period , the faces of the powerful gods and goddesses are kept uncovered to bless the devotees.
  •  Another attraction of this place is the large statue of Maitraye Buddha which was formally inaugurated in 2010 by H.H. Dalai Lama . The basic objective of installation of this statue is to maintain harmony and peace and as the gaze is towards the Pakistan border, it aims at a peaceful coexistence too.

Pangong Lake

Srinagar: There’s a good chance you have seen pictures or videos of Pangong Tso, with its crystal-blue water framed by imposing, barren peaks. It’s the first image most people think of when they hear ‘Ladakh’, especially since 2009, when the climax of the popular Bollywood film 3 Idiots was shot there.

Over the last 11 years, the world’s highest saltwater lake (tso means lake in the Tibetan language) has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ladakh, with tens of thousands of people thronging its shores and taking pictures and selfies. But the pristine beauty of Pangong Tso has a problem underneath the surface, speaking figuratively — a deep territorial discord between India and China that has come to the fore with the incursions by Chinese soldiers in May.

Tsomoriri Lake

Situated in Changthang plateau in south-east Ladakh, Tso Moriri or Lake Moriri is known for its scenic splendour. The high altitude lake is set between Ladakh in the north, Tibet in the east and Zanskar in the west. Tsomoriri along with Pangong Tso are two of the very popular high altitude lakes in Ladakh. At an elevation of 15,075 ft, it is the highest brackish water lake in India. Officially the lake is known as Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve and is accessible only during the summers as the region remains snowbound through rest of the year. The Changthang plateau is home to snowy peaks that feed the lake.

We  were in Changthang plateau , high up above 14000 feet, in the land of the nomadic Chungpas, who brave these harsh terrains, moving settlements , finding temporary shelters, travelling around with their yaks and goats, extracting salt from lakes and exchanging salt and pashmina wool for food . Their settlements were scattered around the pastures ; we saw a few yaks and goats grazing, while a few boys looked on.

However Dorjee said that some of them are now living in permanent structures, and their lifestyles have changed.  “They even have bank accounts madam, “ he exclaimed as we reached Korzok at 15000 feet near Tsomoriri. A remote village with about fifty houses and a 300 year old monastery, I caught it amidst the flurry of the tourist season. The monastery was getting ready for its festival as a few lamas were practicing their cham dance without masks or costumes though. Dorjee explained that the festival largely interpreted the victory of good over evil and the establishment of Buddhism in Ladakh. The legend goes back to the 9th century when a Buddhist monk killed king Lang dar ma who tried to uproot Buddhism in the region.
